I wasted money on fb ads when I started affiliate marketing Zero clicks. I lost the $5 and felt stupid. Then I found Pinterest. Someone in a Telegram group had said "try Pinterest" and I thought it was just for recipes. I tried it anyway.
Keypoint; most people think Pinterest is just for recipes and home decor. But it's actually a visual search engine. People go there to find ideas and they are ready to buy something.
The best part? You can start for free and a pin you post today can still bring clicks 6 months from now. Try that on Instagram or TikTok where posts die in 24 hours.
Here is how I used Pinterest to get free traffic for my affiliate links as a complete beginner.
What Is Pinterest Affiliate Marketing Anyway?
It is simple. You use Pinterest to promote content that contains your affiliate links.
When someone clicks and buys, you earn a commission.
But here is what most beginners get wrong. They just drop their affiliate link directly on Pinterest like this: "Buy this tool, link in pin!"
That does not work anymore! People don't trust it and some affiliate programs don't even allow direct linking.
The smarter way is: Pinterest Pin -> Helpful Blog Post -> Affiliate Link
Your pin sends people to your blog post. Your blog post helps them solve a problem and then recommends the product with your affiliate link inside. More trust, more clicks, more sales.
Here is Step 1: Set Up Your Pinterest Business Account
If you are still using a personal account, switch now. It is free.
Go to Settings > Account Management > Convert to Business. It takes 30 seconds.
A business account gives you analytics. You can see impressions, saves, and outbound clicks. Without that, you are flying blind.
Do these 3 things right after:
- Pick a clear profile name related to your niche. Example:
Blogging Tips for Beginners - Write a simple bio that says who you help. Example:
Simple budgeting tips and side hustle tools for beginners trying to make money online. - Claim your website in Settings > Claimed Accounts. It adds trust and Pinterest will show your logo on your pins.
Step 2: Find Keywords People Actually Search
Pinterest is not Instagram. It is search. Keywords are everything.
Here is how I find them for free:
Go to the Pinterest search bar and type your main topic, like "affiliate marketing". Don't press enter. Look at the suggestions that pop up underneath.
You will see things like:
- affiliate marketing for beginners
- affiliate marketing tips
- how to make money with affiliate marketing
- affiliate marketing without showing face
Those are real searches from real people. Those are your blog post ideas and your pin titles.
Write down 10-15 of them. That is your content plan for the next month. Don't guess what people want, let Pinterest tell you.
Step 3: Create Pins That People Want to Click
Your pin design is what stops the scroll.
You don't need expensive software. I use Canva free version for everything.
My simple rules:
- Always use vertical: 1000 x 1500 pixels. It takes more space on mobile.
- Use large, easy-to-read text. If I can't read it on my phone in 2 seconds, I skip it.
- Use max 2 fonts and leave empty space. Don't clutter it.
- Make a clear promise in the title.
Bad title: "My Favorite Products" Good title: "7 Budget Tools That Saved Me $300 Last Month"
The second one tells me exactly what I will get.
And here is my secret: Don't create just one pin for one blog post. Create 3 to 5 different designs for the SAME post. Change the title and the image. Pinterest will show all of them and push the winner. You get 5 chances to rank instead of one.
Step 4: Write Descriptions Like a Human
Don't keyword stuff.
Pinterest will punish you if you write: affiliate marketing, make money online, side hustle, work from home...
Instead, write like you are talking to a friend.
Good example: This is a simple guide for beginners who want to learn affiliate marketing without paid ads. Perfect if you are just starting out and have $0 budget.
Put your main keyword naturally in 3 places: Your Pin Title, Your Pin Description, and Your Board Name.
Step 5: Be Consistent Without Burning Out
You don't need to post 30 pins a day. I tried that and quit in 3 days.
Do this instead:
- Create 3-5 new pins a few times a week. 2-3 per day is more than enough.
- Save each pin to your most relevant board first.
- Check your analytics once a week.
What to check: Which pins get saves? Which get outbound clicks? Which topics get impressions?
Then make MORE pins like the winners.
My first pin that went viral was 38 days old when it blew up. The pins you make today will bring traffic in 30-60 days.
Quick Practical Tips That Actually Help
1. Study winners first: Search your niche and look at the top pins. What headlines do they use? What colors? Don't copy, just learn the pattern.
2. Make your blog mobile-friendly: Over 80% of Pinterest users are on mobile. If your blog loads slow or text is tiny, they will leave.
3. Always disclose: Add a line on your blog like "This post contains affiliate links." It is required by most programs and people respect honesty.
