Recently, the social media environment is crowded, with lots of guess on what to follow when it comes to marketing and traffic.
YouTube is the best place to start, because it works like two platforms. It identified as a social media app,and also a search engine. People type a problem into the search bar, they watch a video that solves it, they click your link, and when they buy, you get paid.
You don't need a big following account. You just need a video, a link, and time.
In this post I will show you how to promote affiliate links on YouTube, how to get the right kind of viewers, not just any viewers, how monetization really works, and what can get your channel banned.
Here Are Why YouTube Works So Well For Affiliate Links
Three reasons:
- People search with buying intent. Someone typing "best budget microphone for phone" is close to buying. A banner ad can't match that.
- Videos build trust fast. A viewer watches you use the product, hears your voice, and sees the good and the bad.
- Videos last. YouTube videos can also show up in Google results, so one good video can send people to your link for months or years.
The trade-off is time. Many beginner guides say the first commission can take a few months, so plan for patience, not magic.
The Simple Plan: One Product, One Problem
1. Always pick ONE product
Don't promote 10 products at once. It confuses you and confuses your viewers.
Pick one product from one network you trust. it could be Amazon, ClickBank, Digistore24, WarriorPlus or AliExpress. Choose a product you have used, tested properly or at least have knowledge about. If you can't say who it is for and who should skip it, don't promote it yet.
2. Make videos about what people already search for
Don't guess. Use the search bar:
- Type your product name in the YouTube search bar and see what YouTube suggests after it. Like "review", "vs", "is it worth it".
Every question is a video idea. If a question keeps showing up, your future viewers are already asking it.
3. Solve one real problem per video
Make sure you talk about your product which you sell properly and it uses. The best affiliate videos answer a specific question and create a a solution to needs".
You also don't need to say "buy" again and again. If the video helps, a calm "link is in the description if you want to check it" is enough.
4. Get the title and thumbnail right
YouTube watches how many people click your thumbnail when they see it. This is called click-through rate, or CTR. And how long they stay. Strong titles and clear thumbnails get more clicks. But the video must match the promise. A title that tricks people is a fast way to lose trust and risk a penalty.
3 Ways People Promote Affiliate Links On YouTube
1. Long videos
Reviews, tutorials, comparisons. Review a product, explain it well, put the link in the description. This format usually pays the well but ain’t the best at the moment, because most viewers really don’t have that much time to stay on a particular video. because
2. Shorts
Quick videos under a minute, usually the best. Good for reach and fast attention. But there is one big catch with links.
3. Faceless videos
You don't even have to show your face. Record your screen or phone, show the website or product, and talk over it. Your own voice and your own opinions matter. Reading someone else's text with a robot voice is not the same thing, and YouTube treats it very differently.
Where To Put Your Affiliate Link, This Changed
A lot of old advice says "link in the description" for everything. That is not fully true anymore.
- Long videos: Links in the description are clickable once your channel has YouTube's advanced features turned on. You unlock these by verifying your account. Put your link near the top of the description and also in a pinned comment.
- Shorts: YouTube says links in Shorts descriptions and Shorts comments are not clickable, to reduce spam and scams. So "link in the description" does not work for Shorts. (I mostly advise shorts. It stress free and often reliable)Instead, use the channel profile links, or use the Related Video option to send viewers to a long video where your link is clickable.
- YouTube Shopping: Some creators can tag products directly, and eligible US creators can connect an Amazon account for this. It is not open to everyone, so check if you qualify.
- Always test your link. Open your video as a viewer, on a phone and a computer, and click it. A broken or half-copied affiliate link means you get no credit.
Tell People It's An Affiliate Link
This is not optional. If you earn from a link, say so clearly. Put a short line at the top of the description: "This description has affiliate links. I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you." And say it out loud in the video. Use the paid promotion option in YouTube Studio where it applies. Honest disclosure also helps trust, and trust is what turns viewers into buyers.
Vlog Openers To Consider: The First 5 Seconds Decide Everything
Most viewers swipe off because of a weak opening.
Openers to avoid:
- "Hey guys, welcome back..." People leave before you say anything useful
- "Did you know that..." No stakes, no curiosity
- "Today I want to talk about..." Sounds like a classroom
Here Are My Best Top 3 Openers:
- "Nobody talks about the dark side of electric cars..." 68 percent retention
- "I tested this for 30 days straight..." 61 percent retention
- "Stop editing your videos like this..." 57 percent retention
- Experiment with this best products etc.
The pattern: the best openers break an expectation, promise a solution, or call out a mistake. The worst ones often sounds like a lecture.
How Often Should You Post?
Consistency is important, but really do not post multiple times in starting otherwise yt algorithm will set your channel as a bot and don’t make lazy posting.
My advice for beginners: post 2 to 3 good videos a week instead of 2 rushed videos a day. Make each one different, with your own voice, pain point or point of view. Quality first, then speed.
Monetization: Two Different Kinds Of Money
This is where most beginners get confused, so let me separate them.
1. Affiliate income, you can start today
You earn commission when someone buys through your link. You do not need to be monetized by YouTube for this. Zero subscribers is fine. You need a helpful video, a working link, and a clear disclosure.
2. YouTube ad income, the YouTube Partner Program
This is the money YouTube pays you from ads. You have to qualify and apply, and the rules are about to get harder.
The current rules, until January 31, 2027:
- Fan funding and Shopping tier: 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.
- Full ad revenue tier: 1,000 subscribers, and either 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.
New rule from February 1, 2027: For new applicants, the ad revenue tier goes up to 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified watch hours or 20 million qualified Shorts views. The 500-subscriber tier stays the same.
A few things people miss:
- Watch hours and Shorts views do not add together. You must reach one path fully.
- Only public videos count. Private, unlisted and deleted videos don't.
- Shorts watch time does not count toward the long-video watch hours.
- Reaching the numbers only lets you apply. YouTube still reviews your channel, and the review can take about a month. You apply in the Earn tab in YouTube Studio, and you need your AdSense account linked and 2-step verification on.
- Make sure your country is on YouTube's eligible list before you plan around ad income.
So can you get monetized in under two months?
Honestly, for most new channels, no. Let's do the math. 4,000 watch hours is 240,000 minutes. If the average viewer watches 4 minutes, that is about 60,000 views. At 8,000 hours, it is about 120,000 views. A few channels get lucky with one video that takes off, but you should not plan around luck.
A better plan: treat affiliate commissions as your first income, and treat YouTube ads as a bonus that comes later. If your videos are good, affiliate clicks can come long before the Partner Program does.
Also know this: even after you qualify, YouTube can remove monetization from your whole channel if it finds mass-produced or repetitive content.
White Hat vs Black Hat: What's The Difference?
Think of it like a shop. White hat is running an honest shop where customers come back, best for organic traffic. Black hat is tricking people at the door and hoping they don't notice. It fast, but very risky.
White hat, the safe way
You follow YouTube's rules and you build trust.
- Honest titles and thumbnails that match the video
- Real reviews based on real testing, with the good and the bad
- Original content in your own voice
- Clear affiliate disclosure
- Answering questions people are really searching for
- Slow, steady growth
Black hat, the risky way
You use tricks to get views, clicks or sales fast.
- Buying views, likes, comments or subscribers
- "Sub for sub" swaps and giveaways that only exist to boost numbers
- Misleading titles, thumbnails or descriptions
- Spamming links in other people's comments
- Uploading content you don't own
- Mass-posting near-identical videos, or running many dedicated affiliate-only accounts
- Videos whose main goal is to trick people into leaving YouTube for another site
- Promising "get rich quick" results or fake income
Black hat can look like it works for a few weeks. Then one policy review, one strike or one termination can wipe out everything, including the affiliate links you built.
Which one gives the best long-lasting traffic?
White hat, and it is not close. Specifically: search-based videos like reviews, tutorials, comparisons, "is it worth it" videos keep sending viewers for a long time, because people keep searching those questions. A good video from 8 months ago can still make sales today.
For even more safety, don't build everything on one platform. Use your videos to send some viewers to your own email list. If YouTube ever changes the rules, your list stays with you.
Factors That Can Get Your Channel Banned Or Demonetized
YouTube's spam and deceptive practices rules say channels can lose monetization or be terminated for breaking them. Here is what to avoid:
- Fake engagement. Buying views, likes, comments or subscribers, or sub-for-sub swaps.
- Misleading metadata or thumbnails. Using the title, thumbnail or description to make people think the video is something it is not.
- Tricking people off YouTube. Videos whose main purpose is to push viewers to another site.
- Mass-posting affiliate content in dedicated accounts. YouTube lists this as an example of spam.
- Comment spam. Dropping the same link or message again and again in other people's comments.
- Reused or copied content. Repeatedly uploading things you don't own.
- Mass-produced, templated videos. YouTube calls this "inauthentic content". Same script, same voice, same slides, small changes. This can remove monetization from the whole channel.
- Scam-style promises. "Get rich quick" claims and fake income screenshots.
- Not disclosing affiliate links. This can hurt you with viewers, with regulators and with the affiliate programs themselves.
A real example: in January 2026, news outlets reported that YouTube terminated two AI fake-movie-trailer channels with more than 2 million subscribers between them. YouTube said they repeatedly broke its spam and misleading-metadata policies. Their ads had been suspended months earlier. Big numbers did not protect them.
About AI and faceless channels: they are not banned by default. Not showing your face is fine. The problem is low-effort, repeated, mass-produced content. If you use AI tools to help, add your own testing, your own opinion and your own voice.
Quick Dos And Don'ts
Do:
- Promote one product at a time
- Answer one clear question per video
- Test your link on phone and computer
- Disclose affiliate links out loud and in writing
- Use real keywords from search suggestions and real questions
- Be patient and keep improving
Don't:
- Promote 10 products in one week
- Use clickbait that doesn't match the video
- Buy views or subscribers
- Spam links in comments
- Copy other creators' videos
- Promise income you can't prove
1. ClickBank vs Digistore24 vs WarriorPlus: Which Is Best for Beginners?
Best for beginners choosing their first affiliate network. Hook: "If you have $0 and no followers, picking the wrong affiliate network can cost you weeks.
Bottom Line
YouTube is not a shortcut but definitely a good entry. It maybe slow, but an honest way to build traffic that keeps working while you sleep. Pick one product, answer one real question, test your link, disclose it clearly, and be consistent. Do that for a few months and you will be ahead of most people who quit after three videos.
