Email Marketing for Beginners: How I Build My List With $0

No email list? No problem. Learn how I build my email list for free as a beginner in Nigeria. Simple steps, free tools, and what to send without being spammy.

I ignored email list for 2 months when I started LeadVaultHub. Everyone said "the money is in the list" and I thought it was guru talk.

Then my Pinterest got shadowbanned for 2 weeks. Traffic dropped to zero overnight. That was the day I understood - Pinterest, TikTok, Google can take your traffic anytime. Your email list is the only traffic you own.

You don't need 10,000 people. I started with 4 subscribers. 2 were my friends in Magodo.

Here is how I build it now with $0, from my little resource.

Why You Need a List Even With No Product

Someone finds your blog from Pinterest. They read your post. They leave. You will never see them again.

If they join your list, you can email them next week when you publish again.

I use my list for 3 things:

  1. Tell them when I publish a new post
  2. Share tools I actually use with my affiliate link
  3. Ask what they struggle with so I know what to write next

You don't need a course to start.

Step 1: Pick ONE Free Tool

Don't pay $29/month when you have 0 subscribers.

I use these 3, all work in Nigeria:

  • Systeme.io - Free up to 2,000 contacts, landing page + email in one place. This is what I use now.
  • MailerLite - Free up to 1,000 subscribers, very simple
  • Brevo - Free up to 300 emails per day

Pick ONE and stay 6 months. I started with MailerLite, switched to Systeme.io because it's all-in-one.

Step 2: Create a Freebie People Actually Want

No one joins a list that says "Subscribe to my newsletter". That's boring.

My first freebie was 1 page made in Canva free: "The $0 Affiliate Starter Checklist" - 15 boxes you can finish in a day. Exported as PDF, uploaded to Google Drive.

Ideas that work:

  • Checklist: "10-Point Blog Post Checklist Before You Hit Publish"
  • Sheet: "My $0 Affiliate Tools Tracker"
  • List: "7 Affiliate Programs That Approve Beginners in 24 Hours"

What small win can you give in 10 minutes? That's your freebie.

Step 3: Put Your Form Where People See It

I hid my first form at the bottom of my blog. Zero signups for 2 weeks.

Now I put it in 3 places:

  1. Inside every blog post - Right after first helpful tip. This brings 60% of my signups. Text: "Want the exact tools list I use with $0? Enter email, I will send the Google Sheet."

  2. WhatsApp Status / Facebook Groups - I answer a question properly, then say "I made a checklist for this, want it?"

  3. Popup after 40 seconds - I hate popups but it brings a few extra weekly.

Just ask for email. Don't ask for name, phone. Every extra field kills signups.

Step 4: What to Send (Copy My 3 Emails)

I got 5 subscribers and froze. Didn't know what to write.

Use this:

Email 1 (Immediately): Deliver freebie Subject: Your checklist is inside Body: Hey, thanks for joining. Here is the checklist: [Link]. Quick question: What are you trying to do first? Reply and tell me.

Email 2 (Next day): Share mistake Subject: The mistake I made on day 1 Body: Tell real story how you wasted 1 week picking wrong niche. Link to one blog post that fixes it. No selling.

Email 3 (Day 3): Ask question Subject: Can I ask you something? Body: "What's one thing stopping you from starting?" Hit reply. This email got 60+ replies and gave me 5 blog ideas.

After that, email once a week. My rule: 80% help, 20% recommend.

My 30-Minute Monday Routine

  1. Check new subscribers and open rate (30% open is normal at start)
  2. Write one email about last week's post
  3. End with: "What are you struggling with? Reply."

Those replies are gold.

3 Mistakes That Kill Your List Early

1. Waiting until 1,000 to email. Start when you have 1. First subscribers are biggest fans.

2. Buying a list. Never. You will get banned.

3. Only sending links. Help first, recommend second.

Final Thought

You don't need a big list. You need a small list that trusts you.

This week: Create free account on Systeme.io, make 1-page checklist in Google Docs, add signup form at end of your next post.

Don't aim for 1,000 this month. Aim for first 10.
